West Toowoomba marks its centenary and supports the Darling Downs Tournament

West Toowoomba has had a busy start to the year. Planning began in early January for the club's Centenary celebration on 14 February 2026. A subcommittee worked through the format, catering, invitations, advertising, commemorative badges and Centenary cake.

The day followed a formal setting similar to the 1926 event, with brunch, the President's welcome, speeches by dignitaries and social croquet. Corflute signs were ordered, invitations sent, local media contacted and gazebos sourced in case of rain.

On the day the club dealt with misty rain, the non-appearance of the local newspaper, and invited MPs including the Premier and Sports Minister not attending. Just over 50 people attended. Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald spoke about the importance of clubs like West Toowoomba in the community fabric. CAQ President Michael Eddiehausen attended, as did Councillor Tim McMahon. A Channel 7 reporter and cameraman spent time interviewing, and an excellent report was screened on TV.

A highlight was the presentation of Mrs Betty Belz's framed jacket and medals. Betty represented Queensland, and her husband, Life Member Russell Belz, presented the items as a memorial.

One week later, the club moved into the Darling Downs Region Tournament, with Association play on 21 and 22 February, Ricochet Singles on 24 February, and Golf Singles and Doubles the following weekend. The club thanked its honorary lawn keepers, whose courts stood up well despite the lack of real rain. House Committee members provided morning and afternoon teas, assisted by Dalby Croquet Club members.

President Bob Taylor summed up the busy month by saying he was really looking forward to a three-week caravan break.
