Tweed Heads enjoys the Shaw Memorial Spring Carnival
Tweed Heads enjoys the Shaw Memorial Spring Carnival.
LOCAL MP TO THE FORE Geoff Provest, local State Member and Patron of Tweed Heads Croquet Club, did the Club proud at 8.45am, yet again, to open The Shaw Memorial Spring Carnival. Geoff helps to create our history at every possible opportunity.
Bryan Shaw, 16 years our Treasurer, was the founder of the Festival. Pam Shaw was yet another indefatigable member of the Club. Even better than the names on the Honour Boards are those Historic Names appended to our Tournaments.
The sun shone for the Festival in early September. How about that! Yearly we have crossed fingers and toes, often rewarded with atrocious conditions. Prizes reflect how much we value participants from all over Australia and frequently New Zealand. Our Master of Ceremonies and excellent organiser, Paul Raphael, gave us a fun time with a leisurely three games a day. Two events per day of Level Play with, in the Doubles, high and low handicaps thrown in together.
Ladies Day, first day out, was won by Claire from Windsor. A pleasure to have a winner prepared to negotiate that M1 Highway. Men's Day, no entrants. All at the Nationals perhaps? This day converted to a third
Doubles day and in order to fill the places we gave some quite senior Tweed Members a chance to play. Iris Trevethick and Penny Guthrie won their division. Iris, at 90, was an inspiration and was she happy!!
Chris and Beth Parker usually scoop the pool and performed to expectation. They also made a generous offer to hold the Shaw Memorial Spring Festival at BHPB next year. Tweed will be in the process of a rebuild of their Club House. I believe we shall soon be enjoying Members from BHPB as regular players whilst their courts are refurbished. We help each other.
Pennants are completed. Our Southern Visitors are making tracks for home. We love our renewed friendships with them. Now we look forward to Club Championships and Christmas Parties.
