The champion who gives the game away: Murray Tinker

Long before he was building croquet apps, Murray Tinker was winning with a mallet. In 2017, he took the Australian Golf Croquet Men's Singles, and for years he has been one of the most generous teachers our game has.

The national title came at Toombul Croquet Club in Brisbane, where Murray came through a strong field to finish the best golf croquet singles player in the country. He has represented Australia, sat on the Croquet Australia board, and captained Queensland's golf croquet team in 2018.

What sets Murray apart is how much he gives away. He wrote “The Art of War on the croquet court,” a golf croquet strategy piece that has been passed around coaching circles around the country. He runs a YouTube channel called Sharing Croquet Knowledge, where he breaks down shots, films matches, and explains the thinking most players keep to themselves. Ask him how a shot works, and he will show you, slowly, until it lands.

These days Murray is club captain at Caloundra Mallet Sports Club, and he has turned that same generosity towards something new. He has built a set of free croquet visualisers, tools that let you set up and replay any shot across all three codes.

We have had an early look, and it is worth your time. Coming soon: Murray Tinker’s croquet visualiser
