Southport celebrates pennants, competition results and volunteers

The Pennant season for the Gold Coast Tweed Region has concluded. Southport was placed 2nd in both the Ricochet and the Association Interclub Competitions. The promising part is that players new to the games were introduced into competition via the Pennants format. The Club Captain, Eunice Frater, has been a strong advocate of that approach and ensured that the competitors always had supportive players in the pennant team.

There have been many competitions held by other Clubs or by CAQ in which Southport members were involved. Gabby Spencer from Southport was playing with Sidney Bates from Ipswich in the QLD Open Mixed Doubles. They won the Championship and are seen on the photo to the right.

Kathie Grant (above) was awarded the Consolation prize for placing in the QLD Women's Open Singles Championship from Sarah Widden.

Once again there was a visit by women who are members of the Red Hatter Group. They have been visitors to our Club over previous years and always had fun. So, on 19th September, once again they returned to play croquet and to enjoy the delicious food that was prepared for them. The verandah area has been remodelled to raise the roof height and provide more outdoor space. This was a good opportunity for such a group to have lunch outside but be well protected. Robyn Barlow, our very dedicated First Aid Officer, organised two sessions over the last 2 months so that all of those who are qualified to carry out First Aid have had their qualifications renewed. Robyn was very surprised but very happy to receive a Volunteer Award from Angie Bell who is the MP for the Moncrieff electorate in which Southport Club is situated.

There will be many Intraclub competitions being held during the last three months of the year. The Club's champions in the various divisions will be decided by the end of December. Meanwhile the Gateball players will be competing in Toowoomba over the October long weekend. Two teams have entered the Competition.

However, the teams will be missing two of our players- Julia Tai and Kathie Grant. They will be Taiwan competing in events at the Asia Pacific Gateball Union Championships. It is very good for them to be gaining experience in such competitions and they will be able to share their knowledge with all of our Gateball players. Barbara Northcott
