Murwillumbah hosts Gold Coast regional events and remembers Ian Jeffrey

Two events of Gold Coast Regional Tournament were held in July at Murwillumbah Croquet Club, managed by our tournament manager Joy Hughes, under near perfect weather conditions complimented with wonderful play by visitors from local, interstate and overseas clubs.

Open Ladies Singles Adv. Level play was inspiring to watch. Yuni Rowell from Coolangatta club was the winner and Heather Knight from Stephens in second position.

The following weekend 13th/14th of July, M M A D Adv. H’cap open mixed doubles event was held and, again, the weather held out. Simon and Fiona Hockey from South Australia (Simon holds the position of seventh in the world in association croquet) were winners with Eunice Frater (Southport) and Tony Kaucic (Tweed Heads ) coming in second place. Congratulation to all players.

Pennant season is over for our club this year. Being a small club we always managed a team for Association and Ricochet. Our members enjoyed play and catching up with players from other clubs in our region. Members have also enjoyed association coaching sessions at Coolangatta club, provided by the region and conducted by Kathie Grant. The

upcoming coaching of Ricochet in August /September will be well supported by Murwillumbah. Our final event for the year will be the Ricochet Doubles Tournament in August.

Val Smith

Ian Jeffrey was a life member of our club, Murwillumbah, and sadly passed on 9th July in Ballina. Ian will be remembered for his generous nature, always willing to assist with coaching and his very loud voice. He loved association croquet and was still playing weekly till late last year. He will be sorely missed by members.
