Merthyr celebrates 100 years in New Farm Park

On Saturday 27th July Merthyr Croquet Club celebrated 100 years as the "Merthyr Croquet Club" in New Farm Park which was officially opened July 26 1924. Previously, (circa 1907) the club was known as the New Farm Croquet Club with lawns at the New Farm Bowls club across the road.

To ring in this historic occasion, the club put on a spectacle of the century inviting friends and family from all over Brisbane and surrounds to our beautiful surrounds. There was live 1920s jazz music serenading us, while we enjoyed platter after platter of scrumptious savoury and sweet things under the glorious shade of 3 magnificent and imposing marquees.

We held speeches from 1pm which included brief comments from Hon Grace Grace MP our local state member; club captain Greg Kerswell; club patron Cr. Vicki Howard (Central ward) who was gifted flowers at the end of her speech by the president's son "little Archer Kominar"; and club president Zach Kominar who spoke about the history of the club and told stories from past president Emmie Cornelius and other Merthyr notables discovered through recently conducted extensive research through Qld

state library resources and trove to uncover lost Merthyr lore. These works have been put together in a 20-page historical retrospective pamphlet which will be sent out to some neighbouring clubs, and can be made available upon request to other interested parties.

A centenary bell was commissioned engraved with the club logo and "Merthyr Croquet Club (est. 1924)" which lives in the clubhouse but can be moved outdoors to call members in from play at the conclusion of games. Photo of The Bell

There was a delicious cake, and a great coordination of people as we spelled out "100" on the lawns in front of the clubhouse and had our picture taken by an aerial drone.

Despite that no present company are likely to be there, all in attendance wished the best to the attendees of Merthyr's 200 celebration in 100 years time.
