Wynnum shines at Mallet Sports on the Broadwater

Mallet Sports on the Broadwater 2024

Our Club was well represented at two of the events during the Mallet Sports on the Broadwater Golf Croquet tournament during the week.

The GC Doubles was played on Wednesday and Thursday, 26th-27th, where Gordon Giles (Wynnum) teamed up with Mary McMahon (Southport), Lorraine and Barry Beattie (Wynnum) teamed up together, and Arthur Bullock (Wynnum) teamed up with Noel Johnson (Wynnum). Twelve pairs contested the Round Robin Block. The weather was perfect - cold first up in the morning and very warm during the day. There was some great croquet played over the 2 days and eventually Gordon and Mary claimed the Shield with 11 wins and 61 net hoops.

Newcomers Arthur and Noel, seeded 11th in the block, overcame their initial nervousness and tough opposition to finish in 3rd place with 8 wins and 9 net hoops. What a fantastic performance from this pair playing in their first major tournament together.

Our entries for the GC Division 1 Singles, played on Friday 28th June, were Geoff Hull and Gordon Giles, with 8 players in total. Quite a few games went to 7-6, which shows how competitive they were, and very interesting to watch. At the end of play Gordon came out on top with 6 wins and +21 net hoops, Gabby Spencer (Southport) came second with 4 wins and +7 net hoops, and Steve Scrimgeour (Burleigh Heads) was third with 4 wins and 0 net hoops.

Unfortunately, Wynnum didn't have any players in Divisions 2 and 3 - maybe next year!

Our sincere thanks to all involved at the Southport Croquet Club for making us so welcome and for the great hospitality we received to make this a special occasion.
