ix members of Wynnum Croquet Club travelled to Norfolk Island with Go See Touring for a week of sightseeing and social croquet. There were 24 players from clubs including Bribie Island, Bundaberg, Burleigh Heads, Caloundra, Sunnyside, Renaissance Retirement Living and Wynnum.

Gordon and Deirdre Giles managed the tournament on behalf of Go See Touring, while Beryl Russell, Dianne Lovi, Esme Lucas-Havens and Pat Rainbow showed off their croquet skills on the playing fields at Kingston.

The history of sports on the island goes back to the Second Settlement (1825–1856), when sports were played by military and free settlers on these same sporting fields in Kingston. The fields have been prepared for croquet and were a little bit heavier than players were used to, but it was all good fun.

The social interaction between all the players was fantastic to watch.

Deirdre and Gordon were also referees for the tournament.

Bayside Cup GC Doubles a great success

Our last major tournament of the year, the "Bayside Cup" GC Doubles, was held on Sunday 7 November and was a great success, with a full complement of players from Bribie Island, Caloundra, Eildon, Ipswich, Merthyr, Stephens, Southport, Twin Rivers and Windsor, as well as a number of our own club members.

We very much appreciate the generous sponsorship of Go See Touring. Unfortunately, their owner was unable to travel across the border to present the trophies due to the current border restrictions.

As with any tournament, a team effort is required to achieve a good result, and our team did us proud. From hoop-setting and court preparation, right through to games organisation and management, including refereeing, cleaning and catering, raffles, etc., we had a lot of willing volunteers. Many thanks to everyone.

The weather was in our favour with a nice cool breeze. Our lawns were looking fantastic, all helped by the recent rain. There were some fiercely contested games with close results in the Blocks.

Block A was won by Lawrie Simpson and Geoff Jamieson, who won all 7 games. In second place in Block A were Dennis Green (Bribie Island) and Graham McLean (Eildon).

Block B was won by Bob Martin and Wade Hart by just 1 net hoop over Hisham Elkomy and Charlie Ernst from Southport Club.

The final was an epic battle between all Eildon players and was won by Lawrie Simpson and Geoff Jamieson over Bob Martin and Wade Hart.

Deirdre Giles presented the Cup and prizes to the winners on behalf of Go See Touring, our sponsors.
