Wynnum players shine at 2017 Gold Medal Events
Wynnum members impressed at the Gold Medal Events on 29/30 April 2017. Gordon Giles finished 2nd in Division 1, and Dick Pickvance won a dramatic play-off in Division 2.
ynnum Croquet Club was well represented at the Gold Medal Events, held over the weekend of 29/30 April 2017, in picture-perfect weather conditions.
The format was a double round robin, which meant that all competitors played each of the other competitors on Saturday, and then again on Sunday, in the same sequence.
Division 1
Division 1 was held at Caloundra. Our entries were Gordon Giles, who finished in 2nd position, Elaine Rubock, and Tom Komene.
Elaine was the only female brave enough to nominate in Division 1 and acquitted herself very well, finishing in 5th position and having the satisfaction of winning a game against two of the top three players (Lawrie Simpson and Peter Nicholson) along the way.
Division 2
Division 2 was hosted by Bribie Island and our entries were Richard (Dick) Pickvance and Deirdre Giles (who finished 4th).
This turned out to be a most exciting contest. Dick won all his games on day 1, and only lost two on day 2, finishing with a total of 10 wins. Graham McLean (Windsor) also finished with 10 wins. They had both scored 23 net hoops, and each had beaten the other by the same score, so it was impossible to declare a winner. The Tournament Manager then had to make a decision on how to proceed.
After much phone consultation with CAQ and ACA, he eventually opted for a play-off game of 7 hoops, with the winner being the first to 4. Our hero, Dick, went on the court very determined to run every hoop and played like a champion, winning the game 4/1.
As a result of all these wins, Dick managed to knock two points off his handicap, and is now a 6. Well done, Dick.
