Wynnum members compete in CAQ Open GC Singles

CAQ Open GC Singles

Two Wynnum club members played in the CAQ GC Open Singles on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th March 2024. A total of 24 competitors were divided into four Blocks for the qualifying round on Saturday. Players from as far afield as Victoria and Ireland made up a very competitive field. Geoff Hull played at Caloundra while Gordon Giles played at Nambour.

The top four best performing players in each block competed for the Pam Shepherd Trophy on Sunday, with the remainder competing for the Plate. All games were played at Caloundra.

The format of the first three rounds of the championship was a single 19 point game, timed at 1 hour 15 minutes, and there were many closely contested games, with several being decided at the final hoop or being timed out. The final round of the Championship and Consolation X, Y, Z, W were the best of 3 x 13 point games, timed at 1 hour each game.

The Championship final between Bob Martin and Steve Lockhart was a hard-fought match with some exceptional play by both competitors. Bob finally came out on top to take out the Trophy.
