Wynnum celebrates World Croquet Day with flamingos and fun
Wynnum welcomed visitors for World Croquet Day on 7 May 2016 with gentle coaching, flamingo-topped centre pegs and a BBQ lunch. The club offered a free two-hour introduction on Saturday mornings at 9am.
orld Croquet Day was celebrated around the world on 7 May, in an attempt to attract more people of all ages to come and try the sport we love.
Our invitations, posters, emails and letterbox drops were done and our clubhouse was decorated for the occasion. Our fence line was festooned with balloons, signs and banners to gain the attention of all passers-by. This was enough to encourage quite a few visitors to come in to find out about croquet.
They all thoroughly enjoyed the morning, being gently coached on the very basic rules of handling a mallet and hitting the balls. The centre pegs on each court were exchanged for delightful flamingos for the day, which made for a lot of fun and laughter. Our delicious lunchtime BBQ, followed by a huge amount of cakes and muffins, was a wonderful way to end the official World Croquet Day.
If anyone is interested in trying croquet, please come to our courts on any Saturday morning at 9am and one of our coaches will be happy to give you a free 2-hour session as an introduction to the game.
Below is a selection of photos taken on the day, showing our decorations, our gorgeous "maids", our players and some of our visitors.
