Vale Gordon Matthews, 1936–2026

Vale Gordon Matthews, who died peacefully on 19 January 2026 aged 89.

Gordon joined Headland-Buderim Croquet Club in June 2005. Over the many years, Gordon made a huge contribution to the club, becoming both a coach and referee, and serving in various other capacities, particularly those relating to his profession as a doctor.

Gordon's croquet achievements and contributions went far beyond his local club. He captained the first Qld State team in the inaugural 2007 ACA's ISS. For ten years he was the ACA National Director of Golf Croquet Refereeing and the Australian representative on the World Golf Croquet Rules Committee.

In 2021, in recognition of Gordon's dedication to the club, he was appointed Club Patron. As Patron he introduced the Patron's Shield, an annual fun event, intended to bring all club members together in a spirit of fellowship.

We extend our deepest condolences to Gordon's wife, Judith, and grateful thanks for their strong support of Headland-Buderim Club and the wider croquet community over a period of more than 20 years.
