Tweed Heads renames Spring Festival in honour of Bryan Shaw, and Sheila Beattie approaches 98
Tweed Heads renames its Spring Festival the Shaw Memorial Spring Festival in honour of Bryan Shaw, welcomes a new events coordinator, and Sheila Beattie prepares to turn 98 while still playing weekly.
Bryan Shaw, who sadly passed away in July, served as Treasurer for 16 years. Is this a record? Both Bryan and his wife Pam served the Club in many ways, enjoying every activity and giving pleasure to others. Bryan set up our Annual Golf Spring Festival 11 years ago.
So in honour of Bryan and Pam, the Spring Festival has been renamed "The Shaw Memorial Spring Festival". This tournament was held 8th to 11th September and was well attended from numerous clubs. We were honoured that our Patron and local State Member of Parliament turned out bright and early to declare our competition open. These are such special occasions of competition, friendship, and support. Our quite new member Paul Raphael has bravely become our Events Coordinator and cut his teeth on this first effort. It was so heartening when any glitches occurred, visitors willingly came to the rescue to help sort things out. We are so grateful for the patience, warmth, and understanding offered.
Winners were Ladies Singles: Eileen Berridge, Dot Davidson, and Phyllis Waters. Mens Singles: Graham McLean, Geoff Hull, and John Finlay.
Beth and Chris Parker won the Mixed Doubles on both Sunday and Monday. This was followed on Sunday by Mary Hughes and Sharon Daley, then Geoff Hull and Ann Rawding. Then followed on Monday by Keith Harris and Steve Scrimgeour, and third Elaine Berridge and Brian Rubok.
Our Golf Pennants Season has now finished for the Division 2 team after 10 rounds. This included a large number of players given the vagaries of sickness through winter months, plus the fact that summer in other parts of the world attracts a large number of "nomads" to foreign climes catching up on lost time due to Covid. The Round 10 team were happy to beat Southport and creep into a creditable second place.
Justine Elliott, our Federal Member, has very kindly supplied us with a new computer and printer. We very much hope she will join us for a handover ceremony and another game of Croquet. Last, but definitely not least, another significant milestone will be reached on 21st September. Our Sheila Beattie, who I have written of in a past issue, will turn 98 and continues to play a morning of Ricochet, extremely well, each week. We shall then be looking forward to the next celebration in a year's time.
