Stephens members compete in CAQ Queensland Open Singles
Three Stephens members played in the CAQ Queensland Open Singles for Association Croquet. Greg Whymark won the final, and Ralph took out the Plate event.
t was pleasing to see three Stephens members, Ernie, Ralph and Heather, competing in the CAQ Queensland Open Singles for Association Croquet on the four days following the Open Doubles. They had a home ground advantage, but in the heavy fog on the first day the home ground was barely visible! (See the cover photo to get an idea.) There were 16 competitors representing eleven different clubs.
Ernie (winner of Graceville's Ena Mountney Singles) pegged out both games in the first 'best of 3 game' round of the knock-out to go through to the second round. Ralph was beaten by eventual finalist Kerri-Ann Organ (Belmont, Vic), and Heather joined him in the Plate event.
Unlike the Doubles, there were many Triple Peels and pegged out games. The final was no exception, as Greg Whymark (Bribie Island) 'tripled' Kerri-Ann twice. The score was 26TP - 0, 26TP - 0.
Nick Smith (Point Lookout) won the play-off for 3rd against Lindsay David (Graceville). All the results can be found on CroquetScores.
In the Plate event, Ralph once again played well and won it with only one game lost. Dave Luxmoore overcame having to replace his mallet to be runner-up.
Many thanks to Val as event manager, the referees, and the team of volunteers from Stephens for making this such an enjoyable event. Referee Doug Williams presented the trophies on behalf of CAQ.
