Southport wins the Margaret Mitchell Memorial at Murwillumbah
Murwillumbah lost play to heavy rain but enjoyed two clear days for the Margaret Mitchell Memorial Association doubles handicap tournament.
Murwillumbah missed several days of play due to heavy showers. Family joked about players being out on the lawn in hats and raincoats, but even wet weather gear was not enough during some of the heavy rain.
The club did have perfect conditions on 11 and 12 March for the Margaret Mitchell Memorial tournament, an Association doubles handicap event.
Gavin Clarke and Eunice Frater represented Southport, Malcolm Campbell and Ann Rawding represented Coolangatta, Geoff and Alex Chapman represented Uranga, and Val Smith and Paul Raphael represented the local team.
Southport finished in front, with Uranga runners up and Coolangatta third. Their points were 51, 49 and 43 respectively.
The club acknowledged sponsors Murwillumbah Services Club, McGuiness Funerals, Bruce Smith Cabinets, IGA "on the highway" and the Mitchell family of Murwillumbah Tyre Services. Paul Mitchell was on hand to present the trophy.
