Roy M.: Wynnum's senior member finds joy in croquet
Roy M., Wynnum Croquet Club's most senior member, shares his love for the game's tactics and camaraderie, playing three times a week with a homemade mallet.
At Wynnum Croquet Club, Roy M., our most senior member, cheerfully admits he's “aged out” of his previous sports. He gave bowls a go, but found it about as thrilling as watching paint dry. Croquet, on the other hand, hooked him completely. The angles, the distances that demand a steady nerve… it's a game that keeps his mind ticking and his competitive spark well-fed.
Roy has been playing for 30 years and joined the Wynnum club after moving to a nearby retirement village. These days, you'll find him on the lawns three times a week, treating each session as both gym and gathering place. For Roy, croquet is equal parts exercise and camaraderie, with just enough rivalry to keep things interesting.
He's particularly fond of the tactical side of the game. Setting up neatly in front of a hoop to block an opponent. That's his kind of chess move. Long-distance shots are his personal challenge, each one an opportunity to sharpen his skill and prove that precision improves with persistence.
His equipment tells its own story. Roy plays with a homemade mallet, its handle once a humble broomstick. It's practical, a bit quirky, and perfectly suited to a man who does things his own way.
And then there's his “secret weapon” — conversation. Roy has a knack for chatting, a playful tactic that can unsettle even the steadiest opponent. Whether it's strategy or sheer charm is up for debate.
Beyond the game, the club holds a special place in his life. It's a social hub, a source of physical activity, and a reason to step out the door. The mix of friendly faces and competitive spirit makes every club day one to look forward to. At home, his wife is fully supportive — she knows croquet keeps him active, engaged, and happily occupied.
Among his many memories, one stands out: winning the 4th Division of the Queensland Grace Moore Trophy some 25 years ago — a moment of triumph.
When asked what he'd say to newcomers, Roy doesn't hesitate. Give it time. Stick with it. The rewards will come, along with a deep sense of satisfaction. And above all, stay positive.
