Wet weather dampens Wynnum Gala Day but not spirits

he weather outlook was not good, with heavy showers forecast for our Gala Day on Thursday 22 March. However, our optimistic volunteers turned up to set up the courts and prepare for the day.

After extremely heavy rain the previous day and overnight, the courts were sodden. Some dedicated people were seen out on the courts on their hands and knees, mopping up the water with a variety of implements – mops, sponges and buckets – anything to make the courts playable.

By the time play was due to start, we were able to open court 1, and eventually courts 2 and 4 drained sufficiently to allow play. At that stage we were quite optimistic that we would be able to get through the 6 games scheduled for each pair, but the Weather Gods were not smiling on us. Another heavy shower reduced play back to one court, and we were lucky to get through sufficient games to produce a clear result.

First place went to Dick Byres of Bribie Island, playing with our own Aina Johns.

In spite of the shortage of good croquet, players enjoyed the opportunity to sit around socialising with players from other clubs, and enjoying the wonderful spread provided by our lovely ladies.

Thanks to Renaissance Retirement Living for sponsoring the event.
