We're incredibly proud to share Carol's story.

What began as a return to a childhood curiosity quickly became a lifeline. Carol did not pick up a mallet in earnest until 2023. That moment came during one of the most difficult periods of her life, following a serious mental health crisis due to housing instability.

"It was the social connection of being in a croquet club that sustained me," Carol says.

The welcoming nature of the croquet community, the rhythm of weekly games, and the simple act of belonging helped Carol rebuild her sense of self. On the lawn, she found not only structure and focus, but friendship and purpose. In a short time her dedication, tenacity, and strategic play have seen her selected in the training squad for possible state team selection – a significant achievement that reflects both talent and resilience.

Practising 5–6 days a week, Carol is fiercely competitive with a "never give up" attitude. She prepares carefully for competitions and believes every shot counts. Her favourite shot is the 45-degree shot, and that and her trademark modified hat (designed to fit her bun!) have become part of her identity on the lawns.

More than results, Carol says the club's social connection and supportive atmosphere changed her life. "Wynnum Croquet Club is a home away from home. I consider everyone here my team."

Congratulations, Carol. Your resilience, commitment, and love of the game inspire us all.
