Oaten and Williams win Alternate Stroke Doubles, plus one more from Caloundra

inners of the 2nd Croquet Queensland Association Alternate Stroke Doubles were Sam Oaten and Howard Williams of Caloundra. The pair took a narrow win from Gordon Cooper and Glen Stronach (Bundaberg), with Liz Fleming and Cecilia Hains (Wynnum) coming third.

The weekend was wonderfully managed by Sarah Widen and Carole Atkinson, and the referees Greg Whymark, Donna Manning and Linda Davis. The weather was great, the lawns were great and the sporting fellowship was also great.

There WILL be a third. Start planning now and use this opportunity to introduce even more new players to Queensland competitions.

What is Alternate Stroke Croquet?

Simple answer: it is nearly identical to a singles game of Association, but with a pair sharing the play. That is, you have a one-stroke turn, then your partner has the next turn with the same ball. This continues until the break ends, when the opponents do the same thing. To keep track of play, pairs often have a small baton or peg which they pass when they have had a turn.

We will publish a video here within the next week showing the game.
