Metropolitan Challenge GC Doubles a great success at Wynnum

ur first major tournament of the year, the "Metropolitan Challenge" GC Level Play Doubles, was held on Sunday 6 February 2022 and was a great success, with a full complement of players from Bribie Island, Eildon, Merthyr, Stephens, Southport, Windsor and Twin Rivers, as well as a number of our own club members.
We very much appreciate the generous sponsorship of George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals Wynnum, and were delighted that the Manager, Therese Prebble, came along to present the trophies.
As with any tournament, a team effort is required to achieve a good result, and our team again did us proud. From hoop-setting and court preparation, right through to games organisation and management including refereeing, cleaning and catering, raffles, etc., we had a lot of willing volunteers. Many thanks to everyone.
The weather was blustery with some rain showers, so all croquet players had to run for rain jackets on a few occasions. Our lawns were looking fantastic after being cut on Saturday, all helped by the recent rain.
There were some fiercely contested games with close results.
Block A was a very tight affair, with 3 pairs all on 6 wins each, but was won by Bob Martin & Rino Parrella on net hoops. Second place in Block A went to Gordon Giles & Richard Pickvance.
Block B was won by Charlie Ernst & Mary McMahon, who won all 7 games. In second place in Block B were Dennis Green & Graham McLean.
The Challenge final was an epic battle that went to hoop 12 and was won by Bob Martin & Rino Parrella (Eildon). In second place were Charlie Ernst & Mary McMahon (Southport), with Dennis Green (Bribie Island) & Graham McLean (Eildon) third.
