Metropolitan Challenge GC Doubles a great success
Wynnum hosted its first major tournament of the year, the Metropolitan Challenge GC Doubles, on Sunday 7 February. Gordon Giles and Richard Pickvance won an epic final that went to the last hoop.
ur first major tournament of the year, the "Metropolitan Challenge" GC Doubles, was held on Sunday 7 February and was a great success, with a full complement of players from Bribie Island, Eildon, Ipswich, McIlwraith, Merthyr, Nambour, Stephens, Southport and Twin Rivers, as well as a number of our own club members.
We very much appreciate the generous sponsorship of George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals Wynnum, and were delighted that the Manager, Therese Prebble, came along to present the trophies.
As with any tournament, a team effort is required to achieve a good result, and our team did us proud. From hoop-setting and court preparation, right through to games organisation and management including refereeing, cleaning and catering, raffles, etc., we had a lot of willing volunteers. Many thanks to everyone.
The weather was scorching hot, so all croquet players and spectators had to keep hydrated. Our lawns were looking fantastic, all helped by the recent rain.
There were some fiercely contested games with close results. The Challenge final was an epic battle that went down to the last hoop and was won by Gordon Giles and Richard Pickvance from Wynnum Club. In second place were Bob Martin and Graham McLean (Eildon), with Hisham Elkomy and Mary McMahon (Southport) third.
