Mary McMahon wins CAQ Women's Open GC Singles

C## AQ Open Women's GC Singles

The CAQ GC Women's Open Singles was played at Wynnum Croquet Club on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th of April, with the players competing for the Fleming Trophy.

A field of twelve players from south east Queensland clubs contested two six-person blocks on Saturday. The best four from each block contested an eight-person knockout on the Sunday for the championship. All games were untimed. The four remaining players contested a double round robin block for the plate.

The winner was Mary McMahon, who defeated Kathie Grant in a fascinating final. Both players were from Southport Croquet Club. The Fleming Trophy was presented to the winner by Elizabeth Fleming.

The plate was won by Maia McGee from Twin Rivers Club, and the runner-up was Jenee Molyneux from Bribie Island Croquet Club. The Carmel Donley Plate was presented by Cynthia Tacey, the CAQ President.

The hosting of the event was a credit to the Wynnum Croquet Club, with the courts extremely well presented in spite of the recent wet weather.

Wynnum was fortunate to have four experienced referees: TR Deirdre Giles, Cloreen Van Der Sluis, Bob Martin and Ross Rillie ensured that the GC rules were adhered to.

This was a great team effort by Wynnum members, and thanks must go to all those who helped each day: the Tournament Manager and Assistant, referees, hoop setter and assistant, line markers, hoop checkers, those who erected gazebos, tables and chairs, and also the caterers. Well done everyone, it was a great weekend.
