Knights win 2016 CAQ Queensland Open Doubles

nother July event result:

After the perfect weather at the Gold Coast Tweed Regional Tournament, it was a bit of a shock to be cold and wet on the first day of the 2016 CAQ Queensland Open Doubles for Association Croquet. Even the sole Victorian, Kerri-Ann Organ, found it chilly on the courts at Wynnum.

Perhaps the weather accounts for the unusual outcome that nine of the pairs finished on 3 wins after the round robin. Every hoop counted to make it to the Final.

Stephens was represented by the Prestons, the Melvilles, the Knights and Geraldine Trivett, partnered by Bob Dawson (Toombul). Brothers, husband and wife, son and mother: could this be some sort of record from one club?

The Prestons and the Knights were two of the many pairs on 3 out of 5 wins, and Tom and Heather went through to the Final against the Hardys, Deidre and John from Laurel Bank, last year's winners.

In the Final, Deidre made a nice break of 9 and set a leave. After some to-ing and fro-ing, and with time running out, Tom got round to the Peg, set a very neat leave and gave the Hardys 'contact'. John made a fantastic hoop shot at Hoop 4 and made Hoop 5, but Hoop 6 was not so obliging. The score was 18-14 to Tom and Heather.

Thanks to all who contributed to the smooth running of the event.
