Jean Armstrong Memorial Shield 2016 won by Jannine Hawker

As promised, here is more September/October event news.

Three Association Croquet players from Brisbane, Heather Knight and Rosemary Newsham (both Stephens) and Cynthia Tacey (Windsor), were invited to play in the 2016 Jean Armstrong Memorial Shield at Brighton Croquet Club in Adelaide.

This competition honours Jean Armstrong, who contributed much to the sport. The trophy for the ACA President's Eights, Women's Eight is the Jean Armstrong Bowl. This event was held the following weekend in Melbourne. (A report to follow.)

'The Jean Armstrong' is a round robin invitation event for twelve female participants from around Australia, held over three days. It is an opportunity to forge new friendships and discuss and improve one's game. Next year is its twentieth year.

Two days before the event, South Australia was hit by a mammoth storm that blacked out the whole state. Would the event go ahead?

Yes! Fortunately power was restored and Brighton's courts were playable. The weather for the three days was 'variable' to say the least.

It was a tense Day 3, as three players had finished the previous day with 7 wins. It all came down to the last games of the event to decide the winner.

In a 'very tidy finish', the top ranked players finished in order: 1st Jannine Hawker (Western Australia), 2nd Kerri-Ann Organ (Victoria) and 3rd Virginia Arney (South Australia).

As well as the Shield, Jannine won the Triple Peel trophy. Her 3 TPs equalled Creina Dawson's record. Creina presented the trophies to Jannine, Kerri-Ann and Virginia.
