ore Easter Carnival news ...

On Monday, a modified 'Egyptian' scoring format devised by Ernie Melville was used for the Golf Croquet Doubles event. Strong pairings gain less points for a win, so the overall result is often not known until the last hoops of the day are run. It encourages the participation of both experienced and improving players.

The event was keenly contested by doubles pairs from as far north as Eildon Croquet Club and south to Southport Croquet Club. Many are in the State Team Squad. It was very pleasing to have several players from Twin Rivers Community Mallet Sports Club Inc, who have managed to start a new club without courts or clubhouse.

Cesare Crispigni and Ralph Allan (both Stephens) are always a formidable combination and, by winning all their games, accrued enough points to claim the prize money.

This year the club was fortunate to gain sponsorship for the event from the Yeronga Services & Community Club Inc.

Many thanks to Geraldine, who managed the event.

The Easter weekend is always busy at Stephens Croquet Club, Yeronga Park, due to the Easter Carnival for both Association Croquet and Golf Croquet.

In this post, news from the long-running Handicap Singles for Association Croquet, held on Saturday and Sunday.

The handicap format of the event encourages the participation of both experienced and improving players.

Bisques (free shots) were allotted and many were used to 'get out of trouble' but, in the Final, Helen David (Handicap 9, Graceville) used hers to great advantage to defeat Lindsay David (Handicap 1.5, Graceville). Lindsay used a successful strategy from a previous game (to make a break of 13 and peg out that ball) which left Helen with only 3 of the usual 4 balls on the court. With determination, skill and the benefit of the bisques, she made the final score 26 - 16.

It was great to have competitors from three regions converge on the club.

Many thanks to Yeronga Services & Community Club Inc. for sponsoring the Easter Carnival.
