Gordon Giles defends GC Men's Open Singles title

he CAQ GC Men's Open Singles was played at Wynnum Croquet Club on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of April, with players competing for the Pam Shepard Trophy and the Carmel Donley Plate.

A field of sixteen players from south east Queensland clubs contested two eight-person blocks on Saturday. The best four from each block contested a new eight-person block on the Sunday for the championship. All other available players contested another round robin block for the plate.

The winner was Gordon Giles, who was undefeated in the Championship Block, successfully defending the Pam Shepard Trophy he had won the previous year. Runner-up was Geoff Jamieson from Eildon Croquet Club.

The plate was won by Peter Nicholson from McIlwraith Croquet Club, and the runner-up was Ross Rillie from Headland Buderim Croquet Club.

The trophies were presented by Di Leahy, the CAQ Events Co-ordinator.

The hosting of the event was a credit to the Wynnum Croquet Club, with the courts extremely well presented in spite of the dry summer and recent wet weather.

A huge thank you must go to referee Deirdre Giles, who adjudicated over 4 courts over two days, a huge effort.

As usual, everyone enjoyed the superb catering by the club kitchen staff.
