Giles pair win Richard Pickvance Shield Mixed Doubles

The Richard Pickvance Shield – WCC Mixed Doubles Championship, held Sunday 15 October

It was an early 8am start for the 8 doubles teams who played in this championship: Deirdre & Gordon Giles, Viv & Brian Tidmarsh, Richard Pickvance & Karen Meates, John van Barneveld & Di Lovi, Beryl Russell & David Ford, Pat Woulahan & Jenny Hiscock, Lisa Weightman & Cameron Underhill, and Ron Schodel & Ann Brooks.

It was encouraging to see relatively "new" players enter the competition against experienced and game-hardened players like the Giles'. Cameron is such a "newbie" that he played with a club mallet! Well done Cameron!

The unseasonable hot spring weather did not make playing comfortable, but luckily the bayside breeze kicked in to cool things off.

Pleasingly, nearly all teams won at least 2 games, and the ultimate winning team, who won all 7 games, was Deirdre & Gordon Giles. Well played and congratulations!

Many thanks to all the members who helped put this event together: the hoop setters Deirdre, Gordon & Richard; Gordon for being the TM; the cake makers, especially Richard for his super sugar hit slice; Wendy Snowdon for keeping everyone well nourished; and Aina Johns as referee in training.
