wo 'Eildon' teams, Eildon Whites and Eildon Blues, played in the State Gateball Championships held last Friday and Saturday morning at the Ipswich Croquet Club.

There were ten teams in all in the contest, including one from Rockhampton, one from Caloundra and three from Southport.

The winners of the teams section were Southport Red with seven wins, with Moreton Bay the runners-up with six wins. Eildon Whites, led by Robert Roose, also had six wins but their 'for and against' was not as good as Moreton Bay's, hence the third placing. To their credit, they did beat the 'winners', Southport Red, when they played them.

Eildon Blues managed to win only four of their games and came seventh in the tournament, but two of the games lost were by a margin of only one point.

Three Eildon players were judged on their court conduct and game management as part of the process of attaining referee status, and were successful in doing so. Eildon now has three new Level 2 accredited referees: Fran Buckle, Christine Roose and Nancy Scamp.

In the Doubles component of the Championship, Eildon had six Gateballers playing in different pairings: Fran Buckle with Robyn Brown (Caloundra), Philip Rowland with Alan Beeson (McIlwraith), Robert Roose and Richard Bevan, and Ros Crowe and Margaret Bevan.

Thirteen doubles pairings played in a 'round robin' program (play one, referee one) on the Saturday and Sunday. The pairing of Fran Buckle and Robyn Brown came a creditable fourth overall, whilst the others finished fifth, eighth and eleventh respectively. Congratulations to Richard and Margaret Bevan on playing in their first Doubles Tournament.
