Caloundra builds skills, opens pennants and celebrates Murray Tinker at The Range

Club Captain Murray Tinker has set aside part of Tuesday morning play for six skills coaching lessons. The first session attracted 14 participants and was enjoyed by all.

The Sunshine Coast Regional inter-club competitions have begun. Caloundra's GC Division 1 pennant team started strongly with a 9 to 1 win over Nambour, then lost 6 to 4 to Coolum despite winning on net hoops. In Division 3, the plate team lost 6 to 4 to Nambour before a narrow win on net hoops against Headland after the games were tied five apiece. The Division 2 shield team's first match against Bribie was washed out after 180 mm of rain across Saturday to Monday, but the courts were playable again for normal club play on Tuesday morning.

The Sunshine Coast Regional tournaments have recently been completed, with Noosa hosting GC and The Range hosting AC. Caloundra had one entry in the Regional Division 2 AC Singles, and Murray Tinker exceeded expectations. On excellent courts at The Range, with Wallace Roy as Tournament Manager and referee, Murray pegged out in all games, dropped his handicap and won the event, with Sarah Widen second.

Caloundra did not have a competitor in the Regional GC Singles events. Russell Robertson partnered Colin Beckett from Headland in the Open Doubles and reached the championship semi-final.

The club's much appreciated new kitchen is now fully functional thanks to Robyn Brown's work. The committee is investigating ways to procure a new floor to complement it.

Seven Caloundra Gateballers played in the teams event at the Moreton Bay carnival. There were eight teams competing and, despite beating the eventual winners and finishing with four wins from seven games, Caloundra finished fourth. Don and Kerry Helmrich and Robyn Brown and Fran Buckle from Moreton Bay played in the doubles, but neither pair made the final.
