There's a new type of scam making the rounds that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to realistically copy the face and voice of a loved one. It allows scammers to create a fake video call or a voice message that seems to be from a family member, often claiming they're in a desperate situation.
For instance, you could get a frantic call from someone who looks and sounds exactly like your grandchild, claiming they're stuck overseas and need money for an emergency flight home. This is designed to create a sense of urgency, hoping you'll act on instinct before you have a chance to think it through.

To show you just how convincing this can be, the video below is itself a complete AI fake. The people, their voices, and even the places you see are all computer-generated. We really encourage you to watch it, as it helps make sense of this new risk.

If you ever receive a call like this, here are a few simple steps to keep in mind:
  • Take a moment to pause. The goal of a scammer is to create panic. Taking a breath gives you a moment to think clearly and step back from the manufactured urgency.
  • Verify the story independently. A great rule of thumb is to hang up and call your family member back on a number you already have for them. This simple step ensures you’re talking to the right person.
  • Trust your instincts. If a request for money or gift cards feels unusual, it probably is. It's always okay to take the time to confirm that a real emergency exists through a trusted channel.
